Romantic Writings: An Anthology This Anthology, in two volumes, has been prepared as part of the O p en University course, A21 0 Approaching Literature. It introduces students to a wide range of poetry and prose from the period between about 1780 and 1830. The Anthology includes selections from the six best-known Romantic poets — Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron. Shelley and Keats — as well as works by fourteen women Romantic poets. A feature of the Anthology is the provision by the editors of very full explanatory notes (at the end of each volume), specifically designed to help students who may have little previous knowledge of the literature of this period. There are brief outlines of the lives and careers of all the writers represented, together with relevant information about the circumstances of composition and/or publication of each work included, followed by detailed notes on words, phrases, allusions, or references likely to gi v e difficulty. The Introduction in Volume 1 explains the arrange m ent and content of the Anthology and suggests ways in which students might make effective use of it in their studies. W.R.
